Madelyn's pediatrician has been concerned about her heart murmur since she was six months old. I mentioned it to Ammon's cardiologist at about that time and he said if she had what the pediatrician thought she might have, she would have outgrown it already and he wasn't at all concerned (so he didn't listen to her heart). I had a fetal echo with her so we knew there was nothing majorly wrong with her heart and left it at that (fetal echo's can miss malformations of valves, and some small anatomical anomalies. Plus there are certain things that continue to develop after a baby is born so a fetal echo wouldn't be able to predict if those things happened properly).
The past couple of times I have taken her, the pediatrician mentioned her murmur and wondered if she might have an ASD (he did his fellowship with Dr. Puchalski and the other docs at Primary's when Ammon was a baby.) Of course there is no way to know by just listening, but she hasn't gained any weight in FOREVER (she was 19.5 lbs at 15 months) so he thought we had better have Puchalski listen to her.
We took her to Puchalski last week and he thought it was definitely worth listening to. His hypothesis was that she might have a bicuspid aortic valve (that is what I have), but wasn't able to hear the clicking that comes with the malformed valve so he ordered an echo.
John took her to Primary's yesterday morning while I got the kids ready for school. I arrived right after the procedure and switched with John in the hallway on the way to recovery. You've got to love a baby on kedamine :) I'm so sorry if I am a bad parent, but I had to make a little video :) She kept trying to kiss the picture of herself on my phone.
Anyway this was a really long way to say that there is absolutely nothing wrong with Madelyn's heart. It is completely perfect in every way :) She has a little bit of heavy flow in one area (which is the murmur), but it is minimal and not related to any sort of heart condition. I am so relieved! I mean, its nice to go into something like this knowing that everything is most likely fine, and if it was anything it could most likely be fixed by a small procedure in the cath lab. Still, it is definitely something you think about when you already have one child with a heart condition. We prayed dilligently about getting pregnant with Madelyn and I knew no matter what the outcome of the echo, our decision was absolutely the right one for our family.
