What a great day! I spent a couple of hours this afternoon at Primary's with Ammon -he is so fun! A fiesty little stinker, but fun! He throws the cutest little fits and then turns it off instantly, gazes up at me and is content for awhile. Hopefully that will settle down when he's more comfortable- if not, I don't even care! I don't mind a little screaming :) BTW - his WONDERFUL nurse, Megan, let me hold him today - yay :)
They tried to extubate him again last week and I even got to be there this time :) It only lasted an hour - bummer. BUT the good news is they think they finally figured out what was holding him up! His throat is super swollen and irritated from the breathing tube so they think when they pull the tube out, his throat is swelling shut a little. They also found some tissue in there that could have been blocking things a bit. They gave him some steroids for the swelling and cleaned out the gunk and let things get better for a few days. They are going to take him to the OR tomorrow to try to extubate AGAIN. That way the ENT can be there in case they need to clear any more tissue out of the way and so he can see what is happening if it doesn't work. I hope it will! The tube he has in now is super small (to reduce irritation) and he has a gigantic leak around it. Basically, the ventilator is set for a tiny bit of pressure support and nothing else so he SHOULDN'T have a problem when they take it out this time....
He looked so good! I would have taken a picture, but I'm waiting until I can get one without his breathing tube. He doesn't really like to be held much - I think he's just not used to it. He likes certain sounds so once I figured out what they were, I was able to comfort him a bit and he settled right down. I had to lay him on a pillow on my lap so he wasn't overwhelmed and cuddle my arms around him - SO FUN! I love being a mom :) It doesn't really matter what size my kids are - the girls are just as fun to be with as Ammon. I just love being one of the most important people in their lives right now - how selfish is THAT!! And I know it won't last forever so I am enjoying every second while I can :)
I'm hoping to be able to make it down a couple more times this week - I'll get a picture for sure!
I'm just getting back to a computer and getting caught up on everything that's been going on with little Ammon. we wish you guys all the best and it sounds like he's a really strong little guy!
