Still trying to wake up ....

Suzi asked me to post something on the blog since she doesn't have a way to update it.

Ammon is doing pretty well and is still having a hard time waking up.  The anesthesiologist (Mark Clark, MD) came by to see how Ammon was doing.  The nurse explained to him that Ammon was still a little sleepy and didn't feel like waking up.  Dr. Clark explained that he had to use a extra anesthetic gas to get him to sleep this time and that it would probably take a few hours for the anesthesia to wear off.  To help bring his CO2 levels down (which would help him wake up) they placed him on a high flow nasal cannula on 6 liters of O2.  The last blood gas that was taken at 20:00 showed that his CO2 had decreased and become more and more alert.  His is now on 4 liters but they anticipate that he will be back to a regular nasal cannula tomorrow, if he even needs it.

Ammon is really sleepy but is SUPER thirsty.  All he wants is juice.  The nurse is super sweet but keeps telling him that he has to wait for 2 more minutes (she always says 2 more minutes regardless of how long she wants him to wait) and he just says okay.  Finally, around 22:00 she decided that he could have some juice and he was super excited, in a groggy - half asleep kind of way, had a couple big sips on the juice and within 10 minutes he was throwing up.  His nurse was afraid he would do that but since he had tolerated water for the last couple of hours she figured she'd give it a try.

They anticipate that it will be into the wee hours of the morning before he finally returns to himself.  I'm looking forward to that.
