~Ammon John Speth~

What a day! So here's the whole LONG story...

We woke up at 4:00 am, got in the shower and called the hospital as we had been instructed. The girl at Dr. Silver's office had told me to arrive two hours early, but when we called they told us to be there right at 7:30 sooo - we had two hours to kill very early this morning :) It was quiet and peaceful and I was thankful for it.

By the time we got settled at the University of Utah Hospital, endured the torturous IV process (of course they missed - thanks mom for my teeny tiny spider veins) and three attempts at an epidural, it was right around 10:00 am. They started the pitocin and things went well. They finally checked my cervix at 12:00 pm and I was only dilated to a 3+. I was completely shocked - not only because I tend to dilate early, but my contractions had been 8-10 minutes apart on our way to the hospital (I guess that's what you get when you pray that your body will be ready to give birth).

At 1:00 pm Dr. Silver popped in and checked me again - I was now at a seven. I could feel the contractions and they were pretty painful. When they became 30 seconds or less apart they were SERIOUSLY hurting. That is when I realized that my epidural was barely taking the edge off and that this was going to be a painful experience - bummer.

At 1:10 pm I could feel the head coming so she checked me and the head was almost crowning. The nurse and John got my bed out of the room and headed toward the OR right away while I tried to keep the baby in (which, by the way, is impossible). Luckily it was only one room away. Dr. Silver met us at the door with a bunch of other people- John will have to fill in that blank.

This is the part where everything became horribly painful and I started yelling. Dr. Silver was supervising another doctor (who actually delivered the baby) so he held a leg and tried to get me to focus and push. I was stunned by the pain and didn't push as well as I should have, but he was out by 1:20 pm and all was well.

Too many details? In summary, I feel GREAT - no pain at all except a little discomfort at one of the epidural sights and Ammon is doing extremely well and is now settled in the PICU at Primary's. There were three babies that had to be transported to Primary's within twenty minutes of each other (one of which had exactly the same heart condition) and our baby was doing the best so he got bumped to the back of the line and they didn't bring him to my room until 5:30 pm on their way to Primary's. It was really weird not to see him until four hours later and by then he was settled in the incubator so it was a short visit. We went over to Primary's later and watched them do a few tests and take some blood.

So John and I are really bad at agreeing on names and we really wanted to pick a name that meant something to both of us. A few weeks ago John read me some scriptures from the Book of Mormon about Ammon and they were nice, but I still didn't know for sure. This morning he read a great one to me and I think that helped us to be sure. Of course we had to see him before we could tell anyone what we decided :) It was the only name on both of our lists and it felt right. I have learned a lot about Ammon in the scriptures over the past few weeks and I amazed at the man he was. I hope our son will one day understand the greatness of both of the men he was named after.

Alma 48:17-18

17 Yea, verily, verily I say unto you, if all men had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold, the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever; yea, the devil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men.
18 Behold, he was a man like unto Ammon, the son of Mosiah, yea, and even the other sons of Mosiah, yea, and also Alma and his sons, for they were all men of God.

The surgery will be scheduled for early next week. I'll post more info as it comes....
